Sure Start Books on Wheels

Books on wheels is visiting all Sure Start Play & Stay sessions and also Early Steps sessions at Tameside Primary School, Parkhill Primary School and Priory Primary School.

On alternate weeks, Books on Wheels calls at Tameside Nursery and Priory Nursery on a Monday morning. These sessions are very popular - for example 25 children borrow books at Priory every 2 weeks!

Since the launch of Books on Wheels in February 2003 over 300 children in the Sure Start area have joined the library service. Membership enables them to access books in schools, play & stay settings and also from local libraries.

*March 2011 was our eighth anniversary*

The library service is currently running a Bookstart Crawl which is a mini reading trail for babies and toddlers. Each visit is recorded and after stamping the record six times the child receives a certificate and then entry into a prize draw.

All children covered by the Books on Wheels service will be included in this.

Pauline, the mobile librarian says:
'Other things I support is delivering bookstart packs. In school Treasure Boxes are available to 3 year olds. I arrange a session in every school a.m. and p.m., read stories and introduce moms, carers and children to books and promote early reading.

Book boxes are left in Sure Start nurseries and I read stories at events held at Sure Start.

We encourage everyone to come to activities held here at Wednesday library. Also working with other agencies such as Early Steps & Barnado's.
