Dare to Dream

During September Diwan Manna, an artist and photographer from India, led a series of unusual and exciting arts workshops with 25 parents and grandparents, 28 children and workers from Sure Start and Early Steps.

"I learned to let children play and get involved at their own speed"

Together, they made scenery and props from scrap materials and used them to create large-scale backgrounds depicting fantasy worlds. Then the children got dressed up and posed against the background, while Diwan photographed them. Some parents and Sure Start workers got in the picture, too!

Diwan manipulated the photos on a computer, changing the colours and tones to make them even more fantastical. The original art work and photos were exhibited on the last day of the project at the Woods Methodist Church.

As part of our evaluation of the project, we asked parents what they had enjoyed and what they learned. See their comments alongside each picture.

Diwan Manna
Diwan lives in Chandigarh, in Northern India. He has exhibited his work in India, the USA, UK, France, Germany and Poland.

He has worked on many arts projects in schools and community settings in India and the UK.
