Saturday 26th April 2008, Sure Start had its official opening day.
The Rt Hon Tom Watson MP officially opened Sandwell’s flagship family centre in Friar Park, bringing together staff and the local community.
Our centre has been developed through a partnership between Sandwell Council and Sandwell Primary Care Trust with investment from the European Regional Development Fund.
"This is a flagship facility for Sandwell and we are delighted that this development has enabled us to bring together such a range of community services into one place allowing easier access for local people.” - Richard Nugent, Chairman of Sandwell Primary Care Trust.
Trevor Hancock the head teacher said,
“We are delighted to be able to provide local children with a quality education in such wonderful attractive surroundings which enhance both staff and the children’s learning environment.”
“We are very proud to be part of the Priory Family Centre. It really is wonderful to have so many different professionals working together under one roof to provide the very best in services for the local community. Myself and the team here feel extremely lucky to work in such a close-knit environment with fantastic new facilities, enabling us to offer such a broad range of services to the local community.” - Matt Lee, The Childrens Centre Manager
Throughout the day, there was: a Climbing Wall; Bouncy Castle; Raffle; Tombola; Nearly New stall; Arts & Crafts; Balloons and Face Painting.
During the day entertainment was provided by a Steel Band, and the Fire Bridge was in attendance and all the children enjoyed exploring a real fire engine!
The Cafe was kept busy serving food all day, 'till it ran out and everybody finally made their way home at 4pm.
Throughout the day, we ran a competition for "Name the Café"
The competition involved choosing a name and why. Sorry for the delay in announcing the winner(s). We had quite a few suggestions and all the names were so interesting, that we decided to combine two names.
Rita Wisema chose the name OASIS because "it is the only good place on the estate for people and a good place to come and network."
Jodi Partridge chose the name COMMUNITY CAFÉ, because "the café is for everyone and the word community means everyone and all. This name then shows that everyone is welcome"
The name of the centre café is therefore: OASIS COMMUNITY CAFÉ
We will be contacting the winners shortly, to arrange for them to collect their prize - a food hamper
Thanks to all those that entered the competition.
